Mobile catering at Okehampton station gives a taste of things to come
Starting on Monday (15th August) passengers can enjoy a mobile catering service at Okehampton station offering barista coffee, homemade pasties, sausage rolls, sandwiches, homemade cakes and more.
Available at the front of the station from early morning until 5pm, it will be run by Leanne Knight and her team from the Amazing Brownie Bakers.
The mobile offering will give a taste of things to come, with Leanne set to run the café at the station – under its original name, the Bulleid Buffet – when it reopens in early autumn.
Leanne said: “It’s a real privilege to be part of the exciting developments underway at Okehampton station. My team and I are looking forward to welcoming customers from Monday as a taster for the full opening of the café to come.”
Refurbishment of the station building is continuing apace. This will provide rooms not just for the café but also a Dartmoor National Park visitor centre, heritage-style waiting room and Dartmoor Railway Association shop. There will also be toilets available at the station once the café reopens.
Ian Mundy, GWR’s Dartmoor Route Project Manager, said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Leanne and team to reopen the Bulleid Buffet at Okehampton station that will benefit GWR customers and visitors alike. The café, coupled with other facilities being delivered, will make Okehampton station a destination in its own right and provide a fitting gateway to the town.”
Jon Patch of contractors HPS Ltd, said: “We were thrilled to be selected to work with GWR on the Okehampton station refurbishment project. This is an exciting project for us as principal contractor and we hope that once completed the public will enjoy the building as much as we have refurbishing it.”
Passengers are advised that, due to planned industrial action, there is expected to be no train service to/from Okehampton on 13, 18 & 20 August. The mobile catering unit will be closed on these days, but will otherwise be open seven days a week. For more information, see www.gwr.com/strike.
